2011, Strijp-S // connected, responsive, dynamic, timeless, Intelligent Urban Lighting Solution for Eindhoven
what do we mean by lighting people’s cities?
This is the starting question when the design brief was confronted. How should we integrated technology and lighting design, and how would community involvement be integral in the conceptualization of the lighting vision for Eindhoven. The design strategy proposed for Eindhoven, will be the approach of design from the perspective of the community, where local feedbacks are received to formulate the pattern of space usage for the city, whilst promoting for better utilization of resources through future proofing of the lighting fittings to accommodate for future lighting technology improvement. Hence, it will not be the changes in the installed elements, but the changes in the lamps, minimizing the physical changes and costs incurred when the equipments are undergoing an overhaul after 10 to 5 years. Furthermore, the master plan design to implementation to maintenance is crucial in the creation of a well-derived system. Hence, the masterplan will need to be revisited by a design panel , through post occupancy surveys to understand the community’s perception of the space in response to their needs.
In fact, intelligent solution is not the interpretation of the ‘hardware’ nor the technology of design, but the integrated relationship between the ‘software’ (the community) to change/ modify the hardware.
This project is submitted for the competition for Intelligent Urban Lighting Solution for Eindhoven (closing date 6th March 2011), which is organized by living globals, and supported by the city of Eindhoven, which we were awarded as one of the finalist shortlisted for the final.
